| "Mary" "MARY" The most famous woman in the world for nearly 2000 years. She had her distinct features and yet down though these thousands of years, her image has changed with time and place, depending upon the artist and the culture that created the Icon or statue. In the larger view, she has become simply the "Mother". I naturally have thought a great deal about this topic, and have come to see her in two very distinct ways. That of the Earthly woman, wife and mother she was and that of a transcendent being who exemplifies to me the mystical union with the Divine. Often my images portray her with animals or flowers, some aspect of this Earthly life, as in "Mother to Creatures Great and Small", or in a state of mystical union as seen in "The Assumption of the Virgin." And in this seeming divide is the Mystery. And this Mystery is what Our Lady truly personifies. My images go from traditional, as in "La Virgen de Guadalupe" to the mystical reflected in "Heavenly Mother of the Honeybee". |
